Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has challenged newly graduated students to utilize their academic training to create practical solutions for Nigeria’s pressing challenges. During his delivery of the convocation lecture at Babcock University, Ikenne, he emphasized that universities must foster innovators rather than mere certificate holders. The governor was honored with the school’s Good Governance Award during the event.
Speaking on the theme ‘Breaking New Grounds,’ Governor Abiodun highlighted that true education combines intellectual achievement with moral integrity. He asserted that academic competence loses its value without a strong ethical foundation. He praised Babcock University for upholding high standards in both character and learning.
Highlighting his administration’s educational reforms in Ogun State, the governor cited the Ogun REHAB Initiative and the hiring of over 6,000 teachers through the OgunTeach program. He maintained that these efforts reflect his government’s dedication to building a globally competitive workforce through infrastructure and teacher empowerment.
To support academic excellence, Governor Abiodun announced substantial cash prizes for top performers: ₦1.5 million for the best Postgraduate Diploma graduate, ₦2 million for the top Master’s student, and ₦2.5 million each for the leading PhD and undergraduate students. Babcock University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Olatunde Oyewole, praised the governor’s leadership and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing graduates who contribute positively to society.
