The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has formally aligned itself with Uefa and Concacaf to block Fifa’s ambition of selling equity in its tournaments to private financial entities. In a formal declaration released this Friday, the AFC argued that the initiative spearheaded by Fifa president Gianni Infantino lacks the widespread agreement and internal cohesion essential for implementation.
The organization emphasized that the Fifa World Cup maintains its status as the peak of international sport precisely because it relies on the inclusive participation of every confederation and the top national teams globally. According to the AFC, any strategy that threatens the collective integrity and universal spirit of the tournament warrants a full reconsideration. Given the AFC’s stance, it is highly improbable that Fifa will secure the necessary support from its members should the proposal proceed to a formal vote.
