HRM Prof. Epiphany Azinge, the Asagba of Asaba, has issued a stern warning regarding the mismanagement of the Koka Flyover. The monarch stated that the Palace might take control of the site if government agencies continue to ignore the unauthorized occupation of the area.
This declaration followed a personal inspection by the Asagba, which confirmed that the space beneath the structure had become a residence for unidentified individuals and a site for waste accumulation. The visit coincided with the city’s monthly environmental sanitation event, where the monarch criticized the lack of proper maintenance and the security risks posed by the current situation.
Prof. Azinge expressed frustration over the inaction of responsible agencies, noting that the presence of undocumented people beneath the flyover threatens the safety of Asaba. He emphasized that the community cannot suffer due to institutional failure and that local leaders are prepared to act if the authorities remain unresponsive. His concerns align with previous warnings from the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and local NGOs, which had earlier identified the location as a growing security liability.
The monarch further addressed broader sanitation issues in the city, confirming that the Palace has initiated its own efforts to clear blocked drainage systems. While noting that maintaining such public infrastructure is not traditionally the duty of the Palace, the Asagba stated that his office would continue to prioritize the well-being and security of all residents.
