The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports appearing on social media and in the press suggesting that its 2027 gubernatorial nominee, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN), is prohibited by a Supreme Court ruling from serving in government.
Bright Yima Antyo, the party’s publicity secretary in Benue, labeled these allegations as unfounded propaganda orchestrated by political rivals intended to disrupt the party’s election campaign. The PDP maintains that Aondoakaa is fully qualified under the 1999 Constitution to seek the governorship.
The party highlighted Aondoakaa’s previous tenure as Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, noting that he has never faced a criminal conviction or administrative indictment that would disqualify him from office. Furthermore, the PDP pointed out that he previously participated in party primaries in 2015 and 2022 without any legal challenges to his eligibility at those times.
Addressing the timing of these claims, the PDP emphasized that under Section 285 of the Constitution, legal challenges regarding pre-election issues must be filed within 14 days of the event. Since Aondoakaa was nominated on May 24, 2026, the party asserts that any window to contest his candidacy has long expired.
The PDP urged the public to reject these smear tactics and remain focused on the upcoming 2027 election. The party reiterated its full support for Aondoakaa, citing his experience and competence as essential for the future of Benue State.
