APC Gains Seats as Senate President Akpabio Inaugurates Four New Senators

Four new senators were sworn in by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, increasing the APC’s legislative majority to 88 seats.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strengthened its majority in the Senate after four newly elected members were sworn in on Wednesday. This development brings the APC total to 88 seats in the 109-member legislative chamber. Senate President Godswill Akpabio performed the induction, officially seating Senators Olaka Nwogu (PDP, Rivers South East), Envulu Anza (APC, Nasarawa North), Ikeje Asogwu (APC, Enugu North), and Dayo Faduyile (APC, Ondo South).

These vacancies were filled following bye-elections held last Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The positions became available due to deaths or new appointments affecting the previous officeholders. Senate Clerk Emmanuel Odo assisted during the ceremony, administering the oaths to the new representatives.

Addressing the chamber, Akpabio welcomed the senators and encouraged them to prioritize national progress over partisan loyalties. He presented them with copies of the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders 2023, stressing that these documents must be studied daily to ensure disciplined and effective legislative participation. He specifically acknowledged the return of Olaka Nwogu, who previously served in the 8th Senate.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The Senate’s current composition features 88 APC members, 9 ADC, 5 PDP, 4 NDC, along with single representatives from APGA, the Accord Party, and the Labour Party.
