Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, has reminded Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the legislative chamber operates independently of the executive branch. His remarks follow a pattern of government agencies failing to comply with legislative summons.
Ningi stated that the Senate is not an extension of the cabinet and urged an end to the practice of begging agencies to fulfill their legal duties. He emphasized that lawmakers hold elected positions and require accountability.
Outlining potential corrective actions, Ningi explained that a committee could issue a final warning to non-compliant organizations. Should these entities remain unresponsive, the committee would escalate the issue to the Senate. Ultimately, the legislature could formally notify the President of Nigeria regarding the executive branch’s failure to adhere to oversight requests.
