Peter Obi, the presidential contender for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release the academic documents and qualifications of all individuals running for office. He believes this step is vital for improving transparency and restoring faith in the electoral system.
Sharing his thoughts on social media this past Tuesday, Obi highlighted specific inquiries found within the INEC nomination paperwork. He noted a particular section asking candidates if they had ever been legally classified as mentally unstable, prompting him to wonder if current political leadership exhibits the necessary mental clarity for governance.
Obi stressed that the nation’s severe security and economic issues should outweigh political campaigning. He pointed out the distress caused by frequent kidnappings, unsafe travel conditions, widespread food insecurity, and the alleged misuse of public funds, questioning if politics should be the main focus under such circumstances.
He suggested that effective leadership should treat these crises as a national emergency, gathering experts, security heads, and community leaders to find immediate solutions. To Obi, the stability and safety of the country must come before partisan maneuvers. Furthermore, he noted another question on the nomination form regarding the submission of fake certificates. He challenged INEC to be more accountable by making all submitted candidate credentials public.
Concluding his remarks, Obi called for a shift toward leadership rooted in capability, integrity, and genuine dedication, reiterating his belief that a new Nigeria remains an achievable goal.
