A Nigerian military helicopter gunship neutralized eight suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during a nighttime mission in Borno State. The engagement took place on the night of July 22 along the route connecting Bama and Maiduguri.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the event, noting that the Operation HADIN KAI Air Component executed the strike. The helicopter crew was performing surveillance on a suspected insurgent training area when they spotted gunfire from the ground. After the militants fired upon the aircraft, the military launched a targeted response.
While eight fighters were killed in the encounter, others escaped into the surrounding vegetation. Military officials stated that this mission highlights the success of using intelligence-led air strikes to target insurgents operating after dark. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to secure critical supply lines and dismantle terrorist camps throughout the North-East.
