Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that his deputy, Atiku Abubakar, provided N5 million to support efforts to remove him from office during his initial term. Obasanjo issued this statement to address remarks made by former Ogun State governor Olusegun Osoba regarding the political climate preceding the 2003 general elections.
According to the former president, Atiku influenced the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, to initiate impeachment proceedings. Obasanjo stated that during his absence from the office on a Friday, the Vice President met with Na’Abba to persuade him that the president should serve only a single term.
Obasanjo asserted that the process was bolstered by financial backing, specifically alleging that Atiku handed N5 million to Na’Abba to jumpstart the legislative push against him. These details were documented and relayed to the president by his Chief of Staff, whom he described as a trained intelligence official. Despite these maneuvers, Obasanjo maintained that he remained unbothered, as he felt the impeachment threat lacked a valid constitutional foundation.
