President Bola Tinubu has submitted the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to the Nigerian Senate for review and legislative approval. Senate President Godswill Akpabio introduced the President’s request during the Thursday plenary session.
In his letter, President Tinubu clarified that the bill seeks to refine the governance, organizational framework, and oversight of public senior secondary schools throughout Nigeria. The Federal Executive Council approved the legislation on April 30, 2026, followed by a final review by the Federal Ministry of Justice to ensure legal compliance. Tinubu emphasized that this initiative reflects his administration’s goal of bolstering the country’s educational infrastructure.
Following the presentation, Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Rules and Business to evaluate the document and provide a report within one week. This legislative move follows Education Minister Tunji Alausa’s recent announcement regarding the reversal of the policy that separates junior and senior secondary schools. The Minister argued that the previous disarticulation policy was ineffective, caused imbalanced student distribution, and contributed to a significant decline in student transitions from primary to senior secondary levels.
