Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is the subject of a corporate manslaughter investigation regarding the care provided to Valdo Calocane. Calocane was responsible for the deaths of Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates on 13 June 2023.
Before the attacks, Calocane had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was previously sectioned by the trust. A recent public inquiry revealed that he had been discharged in 2022 after staff lost contact with him when he missed scheduled appointments. Northumbria Police is leading the current investigation into the trust.
The trust managed Calocane’s care for two years leading up to his discharge in September 2022. During that period, he was sectioned four times under the Mental Health Act and was warned by a physician that he posed a risk of killing someone. Following the tragic events of 2023, Calocane pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and three counts of attempted murder. He is currently held at a high-security facility under an indefinite hospital order.
A spokesperson for the trust confirmed they are cooperating with Northumbria Police, noting the significance of these investigations for the survivors, the victims’ families, and the community. The trust is also participating in a statutory inquiry chaired by Her Honour Deborah Taylor.
