A passenger has praised a ticket inspector as a hero after he continued to assist others despite suffering injuries in the fatal collision of two East Midlands Railway trains near Bedford on Friday evening. The crash, which claimed the life of one train driver and left roughly 100 passengers injured, occurred around 17:15 BST. Witness Mareks Grabovskis recounted seeing the inspector in clear physical distress, yet still focusing on radioing for line closures and ensuring the safety of those around him.
Recovery efforts are underway, with Mid Bedfordshire MP Blake Stephenson stating that 600 meters of track must be replaced. Consequently, rail services between Bedford and Luton are expected to be suspended until 28 June. Commuters have reported significant travel disruptions, with limited bus replacement services available. Travelers like Bernie Casey expressed their sympathy for the victims while acknowledging the helpful guidance provided by station staff during the ongoing service outages.
