The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu remove Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, from his post while a thorough and impartial investigation is conducted into the passing of Mary Habila. Habila, a physiotherapist, was discovered deceased at the minister’s Ebonyi State home. APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, argued that the minister’s departure is necessary to prove that government officials are not exempt from legal scrutiny.
Reports allege that Habila arrived at the minister’s residence from Kaduna on June 26, 2026, accompanied by an aide, only to be found dead the next day. The opposition party raised concerns regarding why the incident was initially kept quiet and why there were reports of pressure on the family to forgo an autopsy. Further fueling public concern is a viral video featuring a different woman who claims to have experienced sexual harassment at the same location.
The APM insists that an independent inquiry is required to address these allegations, including questions regarding why the minister reportedly vacated the property when medical responders arrived. Yusuf stated that maintaining Umahi’s position while these allegations persist damages the government’s reputation and undermines public trust in the judicial system. The party is calling for immediate action to ensure justice is served and to show that the administration values accountability.
