Akpabio and Oshiomhole Differ on Ambassadorial Confirmation for Fasina

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole debated the suitability of confirming Professor Abayomi Fasina as an ambassador due to pending sexual harassment allegations.

A brief conflict occurred in the Senate on Thursday between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole regarding the appointment of Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador. The contention centered on ongoing sexual harassment claims linked to the nominee.

Senator Oshiomhole expressed concern that approving Fasina while these allegations are active could appear insensitive to women. He highlighted that two separate complaints are currently being processed in court. While acknowledging the presumption of innocence, Oshiomhole argued that it would be more appropriate for the Senate to delay the confirmation until the legal matters are resolved.

This debate took place just prior to the final approval of Professor Fasina, who is the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). The Senate reached its decision following a presentation of the Foreign Affairs Committee report by Senator Simon Lalong on behalf of its chairman, Senator Sani Bello.
