Ebonyi Police Mandate Autopsy Following Mary Habila’s Passing

Ebonyi State Police have insisted on a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death for physiotherapist Mary Habila, despite the family’s scheduled burial plans.

The investigation into the passing of 26-year-old physiotherapist Mary Habila has reached a critical juncture. Despite plans by the Habila family to proceed with burial ceremonies on July 17, 2026, in Kaduna State, the Ebonyi State Police Command has formally requested a post-mortem examination. Police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu emphasized that the procedure is essential to determine the exact cause of death, noting the sensitivity of the situation.

Habila, who was seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works from the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, was part of a medical team supporting Senator David Umahi. On June 27, she was reported as having died upon arrival at the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital, Uburu, after experiencing a medical emergency within the minister’s private residence.

The State Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the inquiry. Detectives have already surveyed the scene and collected statements from witnesses. While the family initially voiced reservations regarding a medical examination, law enforcement maintains that an autopsy must occur with family representation to ensure a transparent and impartial resolution. No findings regarding criminal liability have been issued at this time as the investigation continues.
