Demonstrators gathered across several Ukrainian cities to voice their opposition to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s unexpected firing of Mykhailo Fedorov, the popular defence minister. In Kyiv, a crowd largely composed of younger citizens displayed placards demanding an end to the perceived sabotage of the war effort and chanting slogans expressing dissatisfaction.
President Zelensky has offered no formal justification for the decision, which has sparked significant frustration among military personnel, political analysts, and the public. Appointed in January, the 35-year-old Fedorov was widely respected for his modernization efforts, his commitment to fighting corruption, and his data-driven approach to battlefield strategy. Parliament is expected to vote on the nomination of Ihor Klymenko, the current interior minister, as his successor.
Observers suggest the dismissal may stem from friction between Fedorov and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, or dissatisfaction with the speed of military mobilization reforms. Supporters, including soldiers who joined the ranks due to their trust in his leadership, view the move as a major strategic error. Before his ministerial role, Fedorov led the volunteer IT Army of Ukraine and pioneered the use of drone technology and gamified combat tactics to bolster Ukraine’s defense.
