In response to persistent flooding and property damage throughout Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has instructed the Ministry of Environment to draft a modern flood management master plan. The Governor stated that the previous framework is outdated and fails to account for current urban expansion.
During an inspection of the Judiciary Staff Quarters in Uyo, the Governor declared that all buildings obstructing natural waterways will be demolished, irrespective of their status or prior permits. To maintain these channels, he is launching the Clean Akwa Ibom Brigade, a specialized unit tasked with preventing blockages.
Furthermore, the state will establish Environmental Sanitation Courts to handle rule-breakers. Instead of just fines, those convicted will be sentenced to community service, specifically focusing on clearing clogged drainage systems. Governor Eno also reinstated a mandatory monthly sanitation exercise held on the final Saturday of each month. From 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., all movement is restricted, with no exceptions for commercial activities or travelers. Finally, the Governor criticized contractors at the Judiciary Staff Quarters project for their lack of progress and unprofessional behavior on the site.
