Obi explained that the government’s reversal was a direct result of public pushback against a policy that threatened to financially cripple households already grappling with a harsh economic climate. He emphasized that attaching costs to basic education creates significant obstacles for students during a period when the nation should prioritize getting children back into classrooms.
Stating that learning is a fundamental entitlement rather than a tool for fiscal gain, Obi urged policymakers to focus on robust investment in youth development. He warned that introducing financial hurdles at the primary schooling level will ultimately increase the population of out-of-school children. Furthermore, he extended his gratitude to the citizens, advocacy groups, and parents whose vocal opposition forced the government to reconsider this restrictive measure.
