The Imole Campaign Council, representing Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has formally reached out to the British High Commission in Abuja to express concerns regarding the upcoming August 15 governorship election. Pelumi Olajengbesi, the council’s spokesperson, stated that the vote represents a crucial benchmark for Nigeria’s readiness for the 2027 general elections.
Olajengbesi emphasized that the world is watching the electoral process to gauge the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Inspector General of Police. The council has also submitted a formal complaint to the Inspector General of Police regarding local incidents of violence, demanding improved security measures to protect voters. Olajengbesi urged international observers, civil society organizations, and the Federal Government to maintain neutrality throughout the proceedings.
Olufemi Franklin, representing the Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers, echoed these concerns, labeling the election a litmus test for democratic institutions. He stressed that both INEC and police leadership must act with complete impartiality to ensure voters can exercise their rights without interference. The campaign council stated it will maintain close oversight of the process to ensure the electorate’s choices are respected.
