A major wildfire in north Wales has prompted the evacuation of 36 homes near Conwy Mountain and the Sychnant Pass. Emergency responders have been battling the blaze since early Sunday morning, with approximately 200 acres of land affected at the peak of the incident.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Anthony Jones of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service indicated that the fire is likely to grow due to the ongoing heatwave. Officials are instructing nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed and to avoid the vicinity. The fire service has deployed multiple appliances, narrow access vehicles, and specialized wildfire units to address the challenging terrain.
Local families, including the Campbells, were forced to flee their residences as the fire approached their property lines. One resident, Rita Raweily, noted that the community has been heavily impacted by smoke and the uncertainty of potential home damage. While emergency crews work to contain the front, authorities are urging the public to be cautious, specifically warning against the use of disposable barbecues during this period of high wildfire risk.
County councillor Cathy Augustine expressed concern for the environmental impact on the Carneddau landscape, a region recognized for its natural beauty and important wildlife. As Wales experiences its third heatwave of the year, additional fires have been reported in Flintshire and Gwynedd, heightening concerns for local authorities.
