A devastating fire at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao venue in Bangkok has ignited urgent demands for stricter fire safety regulations. The disaster began on Sunday evening while the local band Thotsakan was performing in the busy Chatuchak district. Band manager Ice Athipat Wijarn witnessed smoke appearing behind the keyboardist before a rapid inferno consumed the room, forcing him to scramble for an exit as an explosion propelled him outdoors.
Official reports confirm that at least 27 individuals lost their lives, while dozens more sustained injuries. The band suffered significant losses, with members Kwang, Breeze, and Bew confirmed dead. Their lead singer, Tik Chaichana, survived only because he was away from the main stage at the time. Currently, more than 60 people are receiving medical treatment, with eight in critical condition.
Witnesses have long criticized the venue’s design, describing it as a dark, labyrinthine space with confusing emergency exits. Local residents expressed shock at the intensity of the blaze, which required firefighters roughly 30 minutes to contain. Bangkok governor Chatchart Sittipunt indicated that flammable ceiling decorations likely accelerated the fire, and investigations are ongoing into whether emergency exits were blocked. Community members and workers near the site are now calling for mandatory fire drills and improved architectural safety standards in nightlife establishments to prevent future tragedies.
