The federal government has officially paused the planned increase for 2027 WAEC and NECO registration fees following significant pushback from the public. On Monday, the Federal Ministry of Education retracted its June 18, 2026 directive regarding the price adjustment to allow for a broader policy review.
Ministry spokesperson Boriowo Folasade noted that the government acknowledged the feedback received from citizens regarding the potential financial burden. While the administration previously cited rising operational costs—such as logistics, security, and technology deployment—as the basis for the hike, Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa ordered the suspension to prioritize transparent, evidence-based decision-making.
Moving forward, the ministry intends to hold meetings with educators, parents’ groups, labor representatives, and school administrators. The government emphasized that no fee changes will occur until these discussions are finalized. This approach aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goal of maintaining accessible education, with the ministry pledging to keep the public updated as the review continues.
