FIFA clarifies 2026 World Cup Golden Boot criteria amid Mbappe and Messi tie

FIFA has explained the tie-breaking rules for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot, currently positioning Kylian Mbappe ahead of Lionel Messi due to assist counts.

FIFA issued an official update this Sunday regarding the standings for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot award. While Kylian Mbappe of France and Argentina’s Lionel Messi are currently tied with eight goals each, the governing body noted that Mbappe holds the current advantage due to his superior assist count.

Mbappe has recorded three assists, surpassing Messi’s single contribution. The FIFA statement emphasized that when goal tallies are identical, the Technical Study Group evaluates the number of assists to break the tie. Should players remain level after this metric, the individual with the fewest minutes played during the competition will be awarded the trophy.

Other players in the tournament include Erling Haaland, who exited with seven goals, and the English pair of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, each tallying six goals and one assist.
