FIFA Outlines Golden Boot Criteria Amid Mbappe and Messi Rivalry

FIFA reveals the tie-breaking rules for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot as Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi contend for the top scorer title.

FIFA has officially announced that Kylian Mbappé leads Lionel Messi in the competition for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot. Although both superstars have scored eight goals, the French forward holds the higher ranking due to his three assists, while the Argentine captain has provided one.

Erling Haaland of Norway currently sits in the mix with seven goals despite his team’s elimination. Meanwhile, English players Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane follow closely, each netting six goals with one assist to their names.

Regarding the tie-breaking procedure, FIFA stated that assists determined by their Technical Study Group serve as the primary decider. Should players remain level after considering assists, the athlete who recorded the fewest minutes on the pitch throughout the tournament will be awarded the trophy. With the semi-finals approaching, both Mbappe and Messi remain in position to increase their totals.
