The Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has set a five-day deadline for St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua, to raise employee wages or face a potential work stoppage. This decision was finalized during an emergency meeting held on July 10, 2026.
A statement signed by the branch chairman, Prof. Aniekan Imo Peter, and the secretary, Dr. Ighorodje Edesiri, was shared with the press in Uyo this Saturday. The association voiced significant concerns regarding the inadequate pay and issues surrounding the remittance of dues at the facility. They are specifically calling for salary adjustments that align with the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (COMMESS).
The official communique stated that if the hospital management fails to engage in productive talks and improve salary conditions within the five-day period, the union will initiate a warning strike, which may escalate into an indefinite walkout. Prof. Peter expressed his appreciation to the union members for their support in the push to secure equitable compensation for all staff.
