Australian authorities have made public a bodycam recording showing the final police interrogation of Bradley Murdoch, the man convicted of murdering British backpacker Peter Falconio. The release arrives as investigators mark 25 years since Falconio disappeared near Barrow Creek in the Northern Territory. Police are still searching for the location of the victim’s remains.
In the video, officers urged 67-year-old Murdoch to disclose where he hid Falconio’s body before his death from throat cancer last year. Murdoch, who consistently denied the crime for two decades, dismissed the requests, telling police he possessed no information. Throughout his imprisonment, he remained defiant and refused to cooperate with the victim’s family, even declining to view a direct plea from Falconio’s parents.
Peter Falconio, originally from Huddersfield, was killed in July 2001 while driving through the Australian outback with his partner, Joanne Lees. Murdoch accosted the pair by claiming their vehicle had mechanical issues, subsequently shooting Falconio and assaulting Lees. Although Lees successfully escaped into the bush, Falconio’s body was never recovered. Despite forensic DNA evidence leading to a unanimous conviction in 2005, Murdoch continued to insist he was innocent until his death.
A spokesperson for the Northern Territory police expressed that the force remains committed to the case, stating that they hope to provide closure for the Falconio family and Joanne Lees. Officials are once again appealing for anyone with potential information to come forward, emphasizing that even minor details could be vital in finally locating the remains.
