Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has expressed significant alarm regarding comments made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress. During a recent appearance on Arise Television, Obi suggested that he might not survive to participate in the 2027 general elections, citing threats to his safety and allegations of government interference.
In response to these claims, Ojukwu characterized the situation as a grave matter that warrants immediate attention. He noted that he has already convened his team to discuss an appropriate course of action. Ojukwu highlighted that the ability of the opposition to function effectively is a valid point of contention. Furthermore, he emphasized that the current political climate raises broader issues regarding the protection of civil liberties, the right to free speech, and the narrowing opportunities for civic participation as the next election cycle approaches.
