University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital doctors end strike after colleague is attacked

Resident doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital have suspended their five-day strike following the assault of a female colleague by a patient’s father.

Resident doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital have resumed work following a brief strike. The labor action was prompted by the physical attack on a female physician by a man whose two-year-old son passed away at the pediatric emergency unit on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that the aggressor, identified as Emmanuel Olatunji, assaulted the doctor shortly after learning of his child’s death. Interestingly, the victim had personally purchased medical supplies to assist the child earlier that day. The strike, which lasted for five days, resulted in significant service disruptions for patients seeking care.

The hospital administration publicly denounced the violence. In an official statement, Head of Corporate Affairs Abiodun Fagbemi emphasized that the facility maintains a policy of zero tolerance for any abuse of medical staff. The institution has since increased security presence and reiterated the availability of formal grievance channels for families.

Management confirmed they support the Association of Resident Doctors in seeking legal action against the suspect. The individual responsible for the assault is currently undergoing judicial proceedings. Hospital officials remain dedicated to maintaining a secure environment for both healthcare providers and the public.
