Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has called on Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, to offer a public apology and pay a N25,000 fine. This follows an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja where Obi’s vehicle was clamped for unauthorized parking.
Keyamo initiated an internal probe using CCTV evidence, which he claims proves the vehicle was left unattended in a restricted zone for roughly 30 minutes on July 4, 2026. According to the minister, security personnel acted correctly by clamping the wheels. The car was later released after Obi spoke with an airport manager, although the fine remained unpaid at that time.
The minister criticized Obi for framing the enforcement as political harassment, stating that as a public figure, he should lead by example. Keyamo emphasized that leaving a car unattended in such an area poses a significant security risk. He has given Obi a one-week deadline to apologize to the airport staff and settle the fine, warning that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria will take further action if the demands remain unfulfilled.
Previously, Obi had described the clamping of his vehicle as an unjustified act and suggested it was part of a broader trend of government interference against him.
