Abia State Government Promises Action on Destructive Gully Erosion

Abia State officials have launched an assessment of gully erosion sites in Bende and Umuahia North, promising immediate remediation efforts for affected residents.

The Abia State government has committed to addressing the severe impact of erosion on several local communities. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, the Commissioner for Environment, met with residents of Amaewu Amamba Uzuakoli in Bende LGA and Atta Emede Ibeku in Umuahia North LGA to assess the damage firsthand. Accompanied by Nkiruka Chidia Maduekwe, the state NEWMAP Project Coordinator, the commissioner inspected the most affected locations.

Ogbonna stated that Governor Alex Otti’s administration prioritizes swift action against these environmental hazards. He confirmed that the Amaewu Amamba site is already listed under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), which will facilitate necessary repairs. Regarding the site at Atta Emede Ibeku, the commissioner noted that the Ministry of Environment is partnering with the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) to begin remediation efforts shortly.

During his visit, Ogbonna cautioned residents against disposing of trash in erosion channels, explaining that this activity exacerbates soil degradation rather than mitigating it. He also urged families living near dangerous gullies to relocate immediately for their personal safety. Local leaders Nelson Umezurike and Uzoka Ihekwumere expressed their gratitude to the government for acknowledging the loss of homes, farmland, and essential access roads that have crippled their local economies.
