The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has expressed alarm regarding the practice of throwing household trash into public drainage systems. Legislators stated that this habit is actively ruining road projects funded by state taxpayers, ultimately threatening the longevity of vital infrastructure.
Emma Nwafor, who chairs the committee, noted that the group conducted field inspections to monitor the quality and progress of various road contractors. While the committee praised the standard of the 1.8-kilometer interlocking project in Iyiowa Odekpe, Nwafor stressed that citizens must stop blocking water channels with waste.
Project coordinator Jack Afara highlighted that residents are also diverting domestic wastewater into these new drains, which undermines their structural integrity. He urged homeowners to build proper soakaway systems and called for community-led sanitation efforts to maintain clean drainage paths. According to officials, preserving government infrastructure requires a unified effort from all residents.
