The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially pushed back the deadline for the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. Originally scheduled to conclude on July 10, the process will now remain open until July 24, 2026. This announcement was made in Abuja by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who serves as a National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
Haruna explained that the decision to prolong the exercise emerged after evaluating input from state offices, various political organizations, and civil society groups. The initiative, which began in August 2025, is being prolonged to ensure that all qualified citizens have sufficient time to sign up for upcoming elections. The commission emphasized its goal of fostering an inclusive register.
Alongside the deadline shift, the commission is launching a digital self-service registration portal on July 8, 2026, accessible at cvr.inecnigeria.org. This tool enables new voters to complete their registration, including biometric capture, via personal hardware rather than visiting a physical office. The system is designed with advanced security features, including identity verification and background integrity checks, to maintain the accuracy of the official voter database. INEC is encouraging all unregistered Nigerians to utilize these updated tools to participate in the electoral process.
