Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has prohibited all unauthorized mining operations within the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State. This directive aims to address the persistent violence that has impacted local communities for an extended period.
The governor issued this order on Tuesday at the Yola Government House while reviewing the initial findings of a committee tasked with settling the ongoing feud between the Bachama and Chobo groups. Fintiri cautioned that his government will pursue strict legal consequences for anyone involved in illicit mining or the promotion of instability.
Robert Tankawa, head of the mediation committee, noted that the conflict stems from land ownership disputes and a lack of inclusive traditional recognition, further aggravated by divisive social media rhetoric. He confirmed that peace efforts are progressing, with both factions signing a memorandum of understanding to halt hostilities.
The committee’s suggestions include disarming armed groups and rebuilding damaged settlements. The long-standing dispute has seen repeated outbreaks of violence, including significant loss of life and property damage between late 2025 and early 2026.
