Onanuga Claims Peter Obi Failed to Properly Account for 2023 Campaign Finances

Bayo Onanuga has accused Peter Obi of failing to account for 2023 campaign funds and criticized his history of switching political parties.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has leveled accusations against Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) figurehead Peter Obi, asserting that he failed to provide a full accounting of campaign funds from the 2023 election. This criticism follows an interview Obi gave on Channels Television this past Sunday.

Onanuga characterized the interview as an attempt to restart Obi’s 2027 presidential bid, suggesting the appearance only served to spark public backlash. He explicitly pushed back against comparisons between Obi’s political history and that of President Bola Tinubu.

Highlighting Tinubu’s background, Onanuga described a consistent path through progressive parties like the SDP, AD, AC, ACN, and the APC. He positioned this against Obi’s history, which included tenures with APGA, the PDP, the Labour Party, and his current role in the NDC. Onanuga accused Obi of deserting parties after losses rather than working to strengthen them.

Furthermore, Onanuga alleged that the Labour Party was left in disarray following the 2023 cycle, specifically noting that funds previously managed by Obi remain unexplained. He reiterated that the 2023 election results were legally validated by the Supreme Court and advised Obi to stop claiming he was cheated and instead accept the established outcome.
