Governor Dauda Lawal has issued an immediate prohibition against agricultural activities within all cemeteries located in Zamfara State. The directive follows a personal visit to a Gusau burial ground where the governor observed the encroachment of crops.
All existing plantings must be removed promptly. Lawal explicitly warned that any crops discovered within these hallowed spaces will face immediate destruction. This mandate is enforceable across all 14 local government areas throughout the state.
Emphasizing that graveyards are sacred sites, the governor stated that using them for farming compromises both cultural and religious dignity. Traditional leaders, local authorities, and government agencies are tasked with enforcing this policy and informing the public. Furthermore, the governor’s office confirmed that surveillance teams will be dispatched state-wide to guarantee compliance with this new regulation.
