The Osun Masterminds, a local civil society organization, has issued an urgent appeal for heightened security ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State. Executive Director Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli voiced deep concern during an Osogbo press briefing regarding the surge in election-linked violence and the tragic loss of young lives.
The organization highlighted the deaths of Ezekiel Olugbemiga, Kolade Eluyera, and Aderogba, noting that youths are frequently targeted in political disputes. While some reports suggest cult involvement, the group maintains these actions are often politically motivated. They are calling on the Nigeria Police Force to remain strictly neutral, boost patrols in sensitive areas, and swiftly prosecute those behind the violence, regardless of their social standing.
Addressing the Independent National Electoral Commission, the group requested transparency and the timely distribution of voting materials to ensure fairness for all parties. They further advised youth to refrain from participating in political thuggery, emphasizing that their ballot is their strongest tool for change.
The group also challenged political leaders to abandon the practice of hiring criminal elements to intimidate rivals. They welcomed the recent directive from the Inspector-General of Police aimed at curbing election violence but stressed that concrete enforcement and arrests are necessary to restore public order and demonstrate that the law applies to everyone equally.
