Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed the ongoing climate crisis on human selfishness, indifference, and the excessive use of natural resources. He argued that these actions have severely disrupted the natural balance of the Earth. During an event in Kano, Obasanjo introduced his Environment and Sustainability Initiative and Trust Fund, an organization named in honor of former Nigerian Bar Association President Abubakar Mahmoud.
Addressing the attendees, Obasanjo contended that climate change stems from destructive human behavior and urged for a renewed dedication to ecological preservation. He stated that while the world was designed in harmony, human greed has caused lasting damage. To demonstrate his own commitment, he noted that he has planted more than 3.5 million trees to fight environmental degradation. He added that protecting the planet is a shared duty for all global citizens and governments.
The Kano State government expressed strong support for the new initiative. Dahiru Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, described the project as a vital move toward sustainable development. As a gesture of support, the government pledged 10,000 tree seedlings to the trust fund. Abubakar Mahmoud explained that the initiative aims to safeguard the ecosystem for future generations, noting that the project has grown from a minor effort into a robust program that protects local communities and diverse plant species.
