Human rights attorney Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who serves as the lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has publicly warned criminal groups in the South-East against exploiting the region’s self-determination cause for illegal activities. In a Saturday statement titled ‘The South-East Must Never Bleed Again,’ Ejiofor emphasized that he has long spoken out against those turning the movement into a cycle of violence, extortion, and fear.
Ejiofor noted that he has faced significant personal threats and backlash for exposing these individuals, who hide behind the pretense of liberation to commit crimes. He specifically addressed recent online videos in which armed groups claiming to follow detained leader Nnamdi Kanu threaten to incite unrest if Kanu is not released. Additionally, the lawyer cautioned against the habit of branding every criminal act as the work of IPOB, noting that such mislabeling obscures the truth.
Highlighting incidents in Umulolo and Arondizuogu, Ejiofor urged the Igbo public to remain vigilant. He argued that insecurity is often masked by noble-sounding causes and that communities fail when they ignore clear warnings. He concluded that his statement is rooted in civic duty, stressing that truth must be defended against those who use propaganda to manipulate the public.
