PDP Endorses State Police Initiative While Cautioning Against Political Misuse

The PDP has voiced its support for the establishment of state police in Nigeria, stressing the need for a decentralized security approach while calling for safeguards to prevent political manipulation.

The Peoples Democratic Party has officially announced its support for creating state-level police forces in Nigeria. The party argues that despite legitimate fears regarding potential misuse, the move is essential to address the country’s rising insecurity by moving toward a decentralized security model.

Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the National Publicity Secretary for the PDP, emphasized that security should take precedence over political reservations. He stated that a well-structured state police system empowers local communities to protect their surroundings. Although Mohammed admitted that politicians might try to exploit the system during election cycles, he argued this risk should not prevent the adoption of a system proven effective in other nations like the United States.

To ensure success, the PDP advocates for transparency, public accountability, and the integration of modern technology in law enforcement. The party urged government leaders to manage these new security units ethically to ensure long-term stability and peace across Nigeria.
