Desmond Elliot Denies Orchestrating Obasa Impeachment Bid

Lagos lawmaker Desmond Elliot denies claims by Femi Gbajabiamila that he led the impeachment movement against Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in 2025.

Desmond Elliot, the representative for Surulere I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has rejected claims that he directed the 2025 impeachment effort against Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. During a Tuesday appearance on the Channels Television program Sunrise Daily, Elliot clarified that he did not instigate or lead the removal attempts.

Elliot stated he was traveling abroad when the movement began. Upon his return, he found that most of his legislative colleagues had already signed the impeachment petition. Believing the action was sanctioned by the party leadership, he added his signature. However, the situation was eventually resolved, and Obasa remained in his position after intervention from party stakeholders, including Asiwaju, who denied authorizing the move.

This defense follows accusations made by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. During an APC stakeholders’ gathering last Thursday, Gbajabiamila claimed that Elliot was a key figure in the impeachment push and that his actions jeopardized his own political standing.
