FCT High Court remands lawmaker Amobi Godwin Ogah to Kuje prison

Representative Amobi Godwin Ogah has been remanded to Kuje prison by an FCT High Court to face trial over allegations of criminal defamation and false declaration regarding a former minister.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered the remand of House of Representatives member Amobi Godwin Ogah at the Kuje Correctional Centre. The legislator, who represents Abia State, is facing charges of criminal defamation and making false declarations.

Justice Yusuf Halilu presided over the proceedings and issued the committal warrant immediately following the lawmaker’s arrest and appearance in court. According to documentation dated June 24, Ogah is to be detained until his case returns to court on July 6.

The legal proceedings stem from a five-count charge filed by the federal government on July 31, 2024. Prosecutors allege that in May 2023, Ogah submitted a sworn affidavit at the FCT High Court registry containing false claims against Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, the former Minister of State for Labour and Employment.

The charges specifically involve claims made by the defendant asserting that the former minister had bribed election tribunal judges and influenced the replacement of judicial personnel to secure a favorable ruling. The prosecution contends that these statements were intentionally fabricated to damage the minister’s reputation, violating several sections of the Penal Code of 1963.
