Kwara Magistrates plan strike over welfare grievances

Magistrates in Kwara State have scheduled an indefinite strike for July 2, 2026, citing unfair welfare conditions and unpaid allowances as primary reasons for the industrial action.

The Kwara State branch of the Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria has issued a warning that it will begin an indefinite strike on July 2, 2026, due to ongoing dissatisfaction with their treatment by the state government. The decision was reached during an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, where members voiced their long-standing frustrations.

Key demands include a salary adjustment, settlement of backlogged allowances, and a fair allocation of official vehicles. The association highlighted a specific inequity where a Grade Level 14 magistrate currently receives lower compensation than a Court Registrar of the same grade. Furthermore, the group reported that furniture allowances, typically paid every four years, have remained unpaid since the tenure of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

While members initially pushed for an immediate strike within 48 hours, they extended the notice to seven days following guidance from the state’s Chief Judge. The association leadership noted that despite continuous negotiations with relevant stakeholders, they have reached a point where industrial action is necessary. The chairman encouraged members to maintain unity as they await a government response before the July 2 deadline.
