Nigeria Plans 5MW Solar Expansion via Rural Electrification Agency

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced that the Rural Electrification Agency will add 5 megawatts of solar energy to support Epe and surrounding areas after the launch of a new 504kW mini-grid.

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe revealed a government strategy to add 5 megawatts of solar power capacity through the Rural Electrification Agency. This announcement followed the launch of a 504-kilowatt mini-grid project in Epe, Lagos State.

The project is part of the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme, which aims to support the national grid. Currently, the national grid provides roughly 3,700 to 4,700 MW to a population exceeding 250 million. Tegbe emphasized that decentralized renewable energy serves as a vital tool to strengthen existing distribution networks and enhance power stability throughout the country.

Tegbe highlighted that the Epe mini-grid represents a significant step in delivering consistent energy for local industries. Due to the area’s economic growth and power requirements, the Rural Electrification Agency is preparing to roll out 5 MW of new renewable capacity for Epe and neighboring business hubs.
