The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially named Nwoku Olaka Johnson of the Peoples Democratic Party as the victor in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election held this past Saturday. Professor Rosemary Ogu, a lecturer from the University of Port Harcourt serving as the returning officer, announced the outcome at the Bori collation center in Khana Local Government Area.
Official figures indicate that Johnson secured 47,961 votes. Osarosaka Ebenezer Erewari, representing the All Progressives Congress, finished next with 1,647 votes, followed by Douglas Fabeke Beeka of the Action Alliance with 1,175 votes. Sam Kinanee Barikpoa of the Labour Party received 367 votes. These four participating candidates were part of a coalition supported by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who backed Johnson for the seat.
This electoral vacancy occurred following the passing of Senator Barry Barinada Mpigi in February 2026.
