Chris Piwuna, a professor of medicine and consultant psychiatrist, has been elected as the new president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
His election was confirmed by his predecessor, Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday. Piwuna, who previously served as the national vice president of ASUU, emerged victorious after a four-day election held from May 8 to 12 during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State. He defeated Adamu Babayo, a professor from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU).
While ASUU has yet to issue an official statement, Osodeke mentioned that a formal announcement would be made soon. With this win, Piwuna becomes the 14th president of the union.
Piwuna, a former dean of student affairs at the University of Jos, earned his MBBS from the institution in 2000. He later pursued a Master’s degree from the University of Malta in 2013. He is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians and a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association.
Currently serving as a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Piwuna is also a former head of the psychiatry unit. His academic focus is on the quality of life in older adults, and he has contributed several articles to peer-reviewed journals.
