73 Killed, 393 Injured In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crashes Over Three Months
At least 73 people lost their lives and 393 others sustained injuries in road accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway between January and March, according to data from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The report revealed that a total of 1,271 individuals were involved in 175 crashes during the three-month period on the major highway.
January saw the highest number of accidents, while February recorded the most fatalities.
Among the major incidents were a February crash near Ayetoro that claimed nine lives, a lone accident at Fatgbems bus stop in January that killed five, and a March crash in the Alapako area that left four people dead.
A monthly breakdown showed that 21 fatalities occurred in January, 30 in February—the deadliest month—and 22 in March.
Injuries were also significant, with 155 people hurt in January, 96 in February, and 142 in March.
“Overall, a total of 175 road traffic crashes occurred along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the first quarter, 2025, and this led to 393 injured persons and the death of 73 persons while a total of 1271 people were involved in road traffic crashes along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway between January and March 2025,” the report showed.
The FRSC report indicated a decline in the number of road crashes and injuries in February and March compared to January, despite a rise in the number of fatalities during those months.
“Using January 2025 as a baseline, there is a 29 per cent reduction in road traffic crashes in February over January 2025 and a 6 per cent reduction in March over January 2025.
“Additionally, there is a 38 per cent reduction in persons injured in February over January 2025 and an 8 per cent reduction in March over January 2025.
“However, there is also a 43 per cent increase in the number of persons killed in road crashes in February over January 2025 and a 5 per cent increase in March over January 2025,” the document read.
