The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has formally warned the public against supporting any unauthorized groups claiming to represent their organization. The body, which serves as the primary authority for Muslim leadership in the South-West, issued a statement in Ibadan, Oyo State, clarifying that it has no ties to recent fundraising events or public campaigns organized by outside parties.
Established in 1964 by Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory, the League remains the sole recognized representative for Imams and Alfas across the region. Leaders, including Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere and Sheikh Saadullah Bamgbola, emphasized that those behind these parallel activities are operating without approval. The organization expressed concern that such impersonation risks creating confusion and fracturing unity within the Muslim community.
Representing 137 Local Government Areas and 113 Local Council Development Areas, the League urged government agencies, philanthropists, and the general public to be cautious. They warned that individuals attempting to exploit the group’s reputation for personal gain undermine the spirit of religious harmony and national cohesion. The official leadership reaffirmed its dedication to promoting peace and cooperation among Muslims throughout Nigeria.
