Vatican imposes excommunication on members of traditionalist Catholic group

The Vatican has issued a decree of excommunication against the Society of Saint Pius X, a traditionalist Catholic group that defied papal authority by consecrating new bishops.

The Vatican has officially excommunicated members of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), a conservative splinter sect, following their decision to consecrate four new bishops in Geneva against the explicit orders of Pope Leo XIV. This decree targets the six bishops associated with the group and extends to lay members who formally align themselves with the organization’s schismatic position.

While the Vatican has indicated that those who abandon the SSPX will be welcomed back, it remains firm that anyone who habitually participates in the society’s celebrations and supports its doctrinal stance will face excommunication. This punishment, considered one of the most severe in the Church, prevents followers from receiving sacraments like marriage or confession within the Roman Catholic Church.

Established in 1970, the SSPX opposes the reforms introduced during the 1960s at the Second Vatican Council. The group maintains traditional practices, such as conducting Latin-only Masses, requiring kneeling for communion, and adhering to strict social values. With approximately 600,000 global followers, the society maintains a significant presence in the United States, France, and various locations across the United Kingdom, including a primary center in Wimbledon.

For many followers, the Vatican’s decision was an unexpected escalation. However, some members, such as Rita Reid, have expressed that these actions only strengthen their resolve, as they believe the modern Catholic Church has drifted away from authentic doctrine. The society now stands at a significant distance from the Roman Catholic Church’s central authority, leaving members to decide between maintaining their traditionalist affiliation or reconciling with mainstream church governance.
