Woman reveals she was working for Superdry co-founder when he assaulted her

A survivor of sexual assault by Superdry co-founder James Holder recounts the difficulty of working for her attacker and the systemic issues within the fashion industry that enable such abuse.

A woman who endured a rape at the hands of James Holder, the co-founder of Superdry, has shared her harrowing experience of being forced to return to work alongside her attacker shortly after the incident. Known as Gemma for legal reasons, the survivor explained that the assault occurred in May 2022 following a work-related gathering in Cheltenham. Holder had entered her taxi uninvited, followed her to her residence, and subsequently raped her.

Gemma, who had moved from working at Superdry to a new company launched by Holder, described a workplace atmosphere defined by control and fear. She recounted the surreal and traumatizing experience of walking into the office the following Monday, where Holder interacted with her as if the assault had never transpired. She felt trapped, fearing that speaking out would jeopardize her career given Holder’s prominence and influence.

The situation only changed when the business unexpectedly went into liquidation, removing the power imbalance and allowing her to pursue justice. In May, the 54-year-old multi-millionaire was sentenced to eight years in prison for the crime. Gemma highlighted that the fashion industry often enables such behavior through male-dominated leadership and a lack of accountability. She now speaks out to encourage other survivors to seek justice, maintaining that Holder should be remembered strictly for his actions as a criminal.
