Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, voiced his frustration regarding Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During the Gwagwalada-Kuje Road project commissioning in Abuja, Wike directed former team captain Joseph Yobo to relay these sentiments to the current Super Eagles squad.
The minister highlighted the stark contrast between Nigeria’s significant pool of international football talent and its failure to reach the global tournament. He expressed his resentment at watching nations with lesser football reputations participate while the Super Eagles remain sidelined. Wike noted that despite having over 13 high-level players active globally, the team failed to secure a spot.
Nigeria’s exclusion from the 2026 event, hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, marks the second consecutive time the country has missed the World Cup. Following a penalty shootout loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo during the African playoffs, the team’s path to the tournament was closed.
